What's the point if no-one's listening?
Outreach has always been an essential component of my research career. I would not be where I am today if it weren't for the enthusiastic scientists who took the time to show me that it was possible career choice when I was a young and impressionable child. I still remember countless live animal encounters and listening to speakers. Therefore, it is my duty to pay it forward.
Additionally, there is a lack of communication between scientists and the general public that I think perpetuates ignorance and misinformation. What's more, so many scientists become overwhelmed and burnt out with the thankless pursuit of knowledge and the lack of validation via interface with the public. Both sides would benefit from more public/science communication.
It is with these two thoughts in my head that I try to participate in as much outreach as I can fit into my research schedule. If you are interested in having me in your classroom, club meeting, education event, etc, please contact me!
